- Kenyon, John
- (1784-1856)He was born in Trelawney, Jamaica, where his father owned extensive sugar plantations. Both parents died while he was at school in Bristol. After that his education was desultory - Charterhouse, and Peterhouse, Cambridge, from 1802-1808, though he did not graduate. He married and settled at Woodlands, between Alfoxden and Nether Stowey in Somerset, where he met Coleridge (see entry) and other poets. He was generous in his giving of his considerable wealth to charitable causes, particularly in supporting Coleridge's family. Robert Browning (see entry) dedicated Dramatic Romances and Lyrics (1845) to Kenyon, and Elizabeth Browning dedicated Aurora Leigh (1864) to him in grateful remembrance of their friendship. Kenyon married twice and inherited fortunes from both wives, although he gave most of it away. He died at Cowes, Isle of Wight, and was buried in in Lewisham (London) churchyard.
